How to Overcome Resistance to Change and Inner Transformation
Are you resisting change? Do you feel stuck and unsure how to move forward?

Yup, I’ve also been navigating that interesting transition period, and so have a few of my clients right now. You are never alone on your journey because we are all so connected whether we realize it or not.
It feels like a limbo period between two different versions of yourself, two different versions of your life. You’re jumping from one version and to the next. It’s super exciting and also super scary because it's unfamiliar territory!
The truth is, you’re meant to be growing and evolving your entire life. You’re meant to enter different stages and chapters of your life as the years pass. All of the countless shifts between birth and death in a single lifetime.
Despite society’s expectations and rigid rules, there’s a natural flow to your life that is uniquely yours.
When you resist this natural flow of growth and transformation, you feel stuck, frustrated, dull and unfulfilled. It’s unnatural to stay stuck and rigid in your life for long periods of time!
It reminds me of the leaves that are changing into beautiful colors right now in the autumn season.
I recently took a hike into the Colorado mountains to admire the golden Aspen. It’s amazing how the trees follow the natural rhythm, the beating heartbeat of the tides of time— and so should you.
Do any of the following signs resonate with you?
Signs that you’re resisting the inner call to change and transformation in your life:
Feeling stuck and unfulfilled in your current routine.
Getting excited about different possibilities, yet failing to integrate them into your life.
Physical or mental health symptoms popping up without an obvious explanation (these are indications of some sort of imbalance that needs to be addressed in your life).
Finding yourself more easily frustrated, irritated or grumpy.
Getting more easily exhausted. Lacking energy and motivation.
Turning to substances or addictions more and more to numb out or get a dopamine hit.
A Spiritual Perspective of Change and Transformation from the Soul Level
All of these can be symptoms of a deeper misalignment between your higher soul and your ego self, which includes the lower bodies — the physical, mental, and emotional — that make up your personality.
On the spiritual level, you are the soul inhabiting the different lower bodies (physical, mental and emotional) to experience this 3D incarnation.
Your higher soul has an eagle-eye view of your entire life. It can see where you are in relation to all other moving parts in this connected Universe.
Your higher self understands the “divine timing” of things and can help you speed things along or slow things down to respect your life’s natural timeline and rhythms.
When you tap into your intuition and receive “hunches,” you’re actually tapping into the wisdom and information of your higher soul.
You can tell that you’re on the right path when you feel excitement, joy and passion! It’s your soul’s way of communicating the right direction to you.
So when your soul is calling you forward with new exciting ideas or a higher vision of yourself and your life that your heart is craving– and you don’t follow it – you’re resisting change.
You’re resisting the natural timeline of your evolution and transformation, and subconsciously choosing to stay stuck, right where you are!
Why are you resisting change? Here are some reasons.
Fear!
Fear of the unknown. Fear of losing people, things, situations and habits that your body, mind and emotions find comforting, even if they no longer serve you.
It can be hard to let go of the familiar and make room for the new to shine through.
And, if you’re not super clear and excited about what you want moving forward, it can be even harder to let go of the past.
Strong Momentum in “What Is”
There’s a lot of energy behind your current routines and habits.
If you’ve been practicing certain thought patterns, emotional patterns and thoughts for days, weeks, months and years…those simply have a lot of energy in them and tend to self-perpetuate unless you spend more energy trying to change them.
It takes extra time and energy every day to consciously change them. It’s definitely easier to continue your current routine and patterns– which is why a lot of people don’t change that much throughout their entire lives, even if they’re not particularly happy.
Attachment to your current identity.
How many versions of you have you experienced throughout your life?
It’s countless, right? So many! Each version of yourself experienced a different perspective of your life with a different set of thought patterns, beliefs, emotional patterns, habits and lifestyle routines.
Each version of you lived a different life. All of the different versions of you and your lives blend into each other in a seeming continuity, almost unnoticeable in the subtle changes unless you look over large periods of time.
Sometimes your ego-self, your lower self, wants to cling to a certain identity even when the whispering of your heart and soul is asking you to flow forward.
Your nervous system can get activated, you can experience anxiety as you feel yourself morphing into a different version of yourself. It can be understandably a little scary!
Which one speaks to you the most?
The good news is that there are ways you can gently help your lower self– your physical body, mind, emotions and personality– align with your higher soul, your divine essence.
When you completely align your beliefs, thoughts, emotions, habits and actions with the joy and desires of your heart, you will wake up with more energy and enthusiasm for life.
You can experience more love, fun, peace and passion. Things flow easier. Creativity flows like a waterfall instead of a trickle. Joy and excitement dominates you instead of fear and rigidity.
Here’s how to gently release and overcome your resistance to change so you can start flowing forward again with life…
Grounding Practices
Connect to the soothing, stabilizing energy of the earth. There are so many ways you can do this.
You can recharge in nature, go for a hike, swim in the ocean, sit on the grass, sit against a tree. Get out and consciously relish in the different seasons of nature.
By absorbing the energy of the Earth and nature, you will naturally feel more soothed, peaceful and grounded even as you’re rapidly transforming within and stepping into a new, fresh version of your life.
Maintain a Daily Routine
Keeping a strong routine during change can be your bedrock and steady foundation. It helps calm your nervous system, body, emotions and mind with familiarity and consistency.
In the midst of inner and outer change, you can maintain a sense of soothing stability with healthy lifestyle habits.
Focus on the foundations, like good sleep, exercise, nutritious diet, fulfilling hobbies and healthy human connection.
Meditation, Prayer and Spiritual Practices
While daily routine and connecting with nature are ways to root down into the Earthly world, meditation, prayer and spiritual practices are ways to root and ground into God/the Universe/the Supreme Being (whatever you want to call it).
You also strengthen your connection to your higher soul and intuition with these practices, which help you feel more guided and supported amid the unknown path ahead
You can strengthen your faith too, which can help you feel supported and stabilized in the midst of unsettling transition.
Self-Reflection, Journaling and Inner Investigation
Take time for self-reflection and journaling to investigate your inner resistance and shine a light on it with your mind. By meditating and investigating within, you can help shift and release your inner resistance.
Be courageous and ask yourself: what are your deepest fears? What are you scared to let go of and why?
Look at each answer. Are they true? Or are you looking at this change with a more fearful, negative perspective?
By poking holes in your deeper beliefs and fears, they can start to dissipate.
